24-Hours-Marseille // part ii: the streets of Marseille

August 28, 2015

Marseille was as special as I had imagined it to be. All at once: stunningly beautiful, lively, sunny, the houses used and worn by the gentle salty breeze that blows from the sea into the narrow streets, but also at times ugly and almost repugnant in its unvarnished reality and pureness. A city that doesn't disguise itself for its visitors. Like an old and worn barmaid, rough but sincere, making clear that it's her house and her rules, so you either adapt and drink the night away with her or leave and don't come back.

  1. Such beautiful photos! I would love to visit Marseille one day. And many of those alleys and narrow streets look a lot like Lisbon, actually :)

    1. Actually, it was between early and late afternoon :) - I really don't know why it was everywhere so empty... At times it was a bit like in these scifi-films, where something happened and you didn't noticed and suddenly you are the last one on earth... but when coming back to the port, I definitely know I wasn't ;)

    1. Thank you Leonie! Yes, it was amazing. Somehow we were really lucky to find these streets this empty. Could have walked days around there and just taking pictures...

  6. Harbour cities tend to be a bit like that - rough and raw and run-down in places. It's all part of their charm.
