Eshaness

January 11, 2014

The name "Eshaness" makes me think of myths and secrets and the far North in times long gone.  And indeed, when you stand there, high above the sea and watch how the power of the restless Atlantic Ocean has been changing the face of the cliffs, how the land and the water seem to be in ceaseless conversation, it becomes obvious that there is something very special to this place.  It is about strength and dimension and change.

Eshaness lies in the northern part of the Shetland Isles called Northmavine and faces the North Atlantic. Since we found no bus that went to Eshaness and back to Lerwick in one day, we decided to rent a car and drove the way up to Northmavine in the early morning hours. When we arrived we were the only people apart from two people coming out the lonely lighthouse. They sat on a bench and took their morning tea watching the sea. Back then I thought it were the lighthouse keeper and his wife and found that very romantic. Now I know that you can rent the lighthouse for vacations, so they probably were tourists, which I find romantic just as well.

For some hours we walked around Eshaness and just couldn't get enough of the view. I took so many pictures there that I decided to make two posts. So come with me and take a walk around.

To be continued...

  7. I wonder how you even found out about this place. It is incredibly beautiful. Both wild and strong at the same time and like you said, about strength, dimension and change. Your pictures are so beautiful that it brings out the atmosphere that you are trying to get us to experience.
My wish right now is that I could rent that lighthouse and stay there with my sweetheart for a long time.

  9. What an incredibly location! It took my breath away just looking at them. I can almost feel the spray of the sea on my face, as it crashes against the base of the rocks. You're quite right--I think of history when I look at the rocks, of myths and creatures and stories. It's hard not to, when faced with such lonesome, dramatic landscapes. Also--I can see the couple sitting on the bench in the first photo! They appear dwarf-like!
