Have a merry Christmas and a happy new year!

Golden lights and fireworks

November 15, 2013

We spend our evening in Edinburgh by strolling through the city and making as much detours as possible on our way back to the station. Since it was the Fringe festival, the city was full of music, everywhere you could stop and listen to someone singing or playing. There was a very special atmosphere in the air, almost magical.

Just before we caught our bus back to Glasgow, as if the city wanted to say Goodbye, there were fireworks.
A wonderful completion of our day.

Edinburgh, you old heartbreaker!

And then we set off on a journey across the North Sea to a much more northern point - the actual destination of our travels: Shetland!

Arthur's Seat

November 11, 2013

It was late afternoon when we decided to walk up to Arthur's Seat, a place where you have a fantastic view over Edinburgh and into the Scottish landscape. The light was almost surreal and as the time went by everything turned from yellow into red.

We decided that one day we have to go back to Edinburgh, bring more time and walk up this hill again, taking a bottle of wine and watch the night coming over the city.

Holyrood Palace

November 04, 2013

Colours! When I think about the gardens behind the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the pictures in my head look like this: colours popping, mega contrasts and yellow and green. And the unusual warmth of the Scottish summer this year. The stones, which are not used to the sunlight, soaking it in as if to save it for the next years. The lawn looking as if they fertilise it with neon.

This is what my memories of the Palace of Holyroodhouse look like.

The Abbey

October 31, 2013

At the end of the Royal Mile, opposite the massive Edinburgh Castle, is the Palace of Holyroodhouse. When the Queen is not "at home", you can visit it, go inside and walk around the Gardens. Attached to the palace are the ruins of an ancient abbey. Being over 800 years old - what stories it could tell...

Actually I wanted to make only one post about the palace and take you with me on a tour through the gardens. While I edited the pictures, I realised how much I liked the black and white versions of the abbey. Only some days ago I watched a documentary about Henry Cartier-Bresson. I love his work, but I was never someone for black and white in my own pictures. But in the interview he said something like, that colours in a picture distracts the viewer from recognising the geometry of the whole. This geometry-thought didn't leave me and I definitely see his point. Anyway, if by chance or because somewhere in the back of my head Bresson's view manifested itself ....I couldn't bring colour to the abbey. Its mystery and age and hidden tales lie in the shadows and the grey.

Hello Edinburgh!

October 27, 2013

While we stayed in Glasgow, we decided to go on a day trip to Edinburgh, which is very comfortable with a regular bus service taking only about an hour to get there. You couldn't even think about staying overnight (to a reasonable price), because the whole town was under the siege of the Fringe Festival. Music everywhere and an incredible atmosphere!

Edinburgh has its very own character, I think. The dark stone of the buildings, the narrow alleys that wind like a huge labyrinth, everything adds to the gloomy atmosphere of a Stevenson story or a Rankin thriller... or maybe I read to much of it in advance... ;) Anyway, one day was too short and I  definitely want to go back and explore the city again.

Finally I got them! Fried Mars Bars! Yes, you've got it right. Fried. Mars. Bars. The Scottish know what's good! If you ever happen to come across them and you like sweets and have a strong stomach: try one!

October {Wallpaper}

October 02, 2013

I took the picture for October's wallpaper on our day-trip to Edinburgh.

This small path leads up to a viewpoint (I think it is called "Arthur's Seat") from which you have a wonderful view all over the city. It's a fantastic spot  - more pictures soon!

Have a fantastic, golden October!
