Happy new year, everyone!!!

For my first blogpost in 2017, I chose some of my favourite pictures from last year, which somehow I never got around to show you. In late September, on a really warm autumn evening I met with Viktoria, a model based in Leipzig. She was for work in Berlin, so we decided to meet for a spontaneous photo session. We wanted to shoot at the Gleisdreieck Park, an urban park in the heart of Berlin, that somehow never got as popular as the Tempelhofer Feld.

However, we met around 6pm, we were really late with the sun seting around 7pm in September. In the end we had around half an hour to shoot, trying to catch the fading light. But sometimes half an hour is all you need... In the end all that matters is that you go out and make the best of it.

For this month' desktop wallpaper I chose a picture I took during my 365picture-project "July to July" (you can read more about it here: click). It has been one of my favourites ever since. I took it on my way home from a bridge that leads across the Berlin Stadtautobahn on a cold winter evening. So you see on this picture the lights of passing cars, illuminated houses, and the Berlin Funkturm (green tower in the back). I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

analogue friday - summer vibes

The following picture was not taken by me but by my camera. The strap on which she was hanging around my neck snapped and with a bang - that hurts the ears of everyone, who loves cameras - it bounced on the paving! And took this picture!

I didn't know if everything was alright - the exterior had some scratches but nothing serious. So I kept on photographing with her. And since the next picture was also the next on the roll, I think she's fine ;)

The same thing happened yesterday again with my Mamiya C330 (I'll never trust analogue camera straps again!)... I hope she's fine, but the roll is not yet full and developed. I'll keep you posted...

Berlin, beautiful beast

It's been two weeks that I'm back from Norderney and back in Berlin. And I'm still not used to this big ugly beauty, whose vastness is made of concrete and not of water. And when I'm in danger to lose my love for this city I go to a high building and look out and find my love again.

U173: glimpses of the stations II

Some weeks ago I told you about the photoseries/book I'm working on at the moment. It's called "U 173 - the colours of the stations" and the series will show pictures of all 173 underground stations of Berlin. I love this project and the more I'm working on it, the more I realise how every station has a character of its very own. I promised to show you on this blog every now and then some "outtakes", pictures I took at the stations that will not get into the series but which I like nevertheless. U 173 - the colours of the stations

I'm really, really, really, really excited, because today is the day that I'm finally ready to show you something that I've been working on quite a while now ...

I have always been a fan of the Berlin underground, undergrounds in general. I think they have their very own atmosphere, their very own aesthetics, which I always found fascinating. This narrowness, this slightly claustrophobic sensation that entering an underground station provokes.  Some day last year, I had the idea to explore this with my camera, to make a series about Berlin's underground stations. About all of them. When I learned that there are 173, I was really surprised - I didn't know there were so many! But that only strengthened my plan - to explore them all. Although it will take me quite some time ... :)

Another part of this idea was not only to "collect" them all and take pictures of them, but to focus especially on their colours. Because they all have colours. One, two, three colours are always on my mind, when I think of one. And I think that's the case with many people. And not only with Berlin stations. Name a station and your mind shows you a colour. The stations all have colours.

And so "U 173" was born: a photographic journey into the colours of Berlin's underground - which I started to photograph some weeks ago. I decided to keep you updated on the blog about the process and show you pictures I took while photographing for the book. The pictures today are from the first three stations I photographed. From the line U1, that connects Kurfürstendamm in Charlottenburg with Warschauer Brücke in Friedrichshain.

So, bit by bit, you can now come with me on a tour beneath the whole of Berlin over the next months. And in the end, there hopefully will be an illustrated book containing the 173 underground stations of today's Berlin and giving a colourful guide through them.
